Ethical adventures in Wild Sumatra
with GREEN HILL!
Protecting the rainforest and it’s wildlife
through conservation tourism since 2006
Welcome to Green Hill.
“We” are the husband and wife team of Mbra and Andrea, we created Green Hill in 2006 and our vision was to build a conservation project that would help to protect Gunung Leuser National Park, it’s wildlife and human communities. What makes us unique is that our conservation work is funded by our ethical and sustainable tourism programme in which we take YOU, our conservation minded and adventurous visitors, on jungle treks in areas which are off the beaten track and well away from the busy tourist trails.
Mbra was born in Bukit Kencur and has been a guide for over 20 years (many with a scientific research project) but is now focusing on the management of Kuta Langis Ecolodge and farm…..our regeneration site in a converted palm oil plantation. Andrea has lived in Sumatra for over 15 years, has a master's degree in Primate Conservation, is studying for a PhD (very slowly) and recently published a scientific paper about rule compliance in the national park. She runs an environmental education programme for adults (guides, visitors, locals etc), a Nature Club & Community Library and is working with the national park on a education and awareness campaign.
Explore WILD Sumatra from our Ecolodges in two stunning rainforest locations.
The stunning Kuta Langis Ecolodge 30 minutes outside Bukit Lawang.
Green Hill guest house in the up river area in the heart of Bukit Lawang.
Go jungle trekking in pristine locations away from tourist trails with our hand picked, experienced and professional guides.
We specialise in ethical and sustainable tourism by trekking routinely in remote areas where no one else goes. Let us take you beyond the ordinary to see the untouched jungles of Bukit Kencur, Tualang Gepang, Simpang Dua and Simolap Hotsprings. You can also join us for classic jungle trek in the Bukit Lawang area.
When you stay or trek with us you contribute directly to the conservation of the rainforest, protection of it’s wildlife and our long running conservation projects!
We care passionately about the environment, the wildlife and the people around us and we want you to enjoy your trip in an ethical and sustainable manner. This is our home. We do not donate to 3rd parties on your behalf…we have our own conservation projects which are the core of our being.
Ethical = we have a code of practice for ourselves, our guides and everyone who works with us. We strictly follow and actively promote the national park rules (which Andrea actually wrote in conjunction with the national park authorities) with particular focus on not feeding the wildlife and ethical wildlife photography. We have a set price for our treks, we rarely give discounts, and this allows us to pay our staff fair and consistent salarys that do not vary.
Sustainable = We specialise in sustainable tourism by trekking routinely in remote areas where no one else goes. We actively sought out the remote areas where we trek and have been pioneering in this approach. By doing this we can take a small amount of pressure off the busy Bukit Lawang trails, help protect the forest of the remote areas and also share tourism income with the remote villages.
