Jungle trekking

We specialise in ethical & conservation focused trekking by taking you away from the tourist trails to stunning remote areas. We strictly follow national park rules for visitors and actively promote sustainable trekking practices . We use only hand picked, knowledgeable and experienced guides from Bukit Lawang and the remote villages.

When you go trekking with us in remote areas you are making a direct contribution towards protection of the rainforest and its wildlife.

Here at Green Hill we want to use our knowledge and experience to help you choose the right trek for you. We do not offer cookie cutter treks or try and squeeze you into a group of many. We know it can be difficult choosing the perfect trek so we recommend reading the overview below and having a look at the different options.

We schedule our treks on any day to suit our guests requirements…we do not have a set timetable.

When you are ready drop us an email or WhatsApp with your thoughts and fire away with any questions at all. Let us use our extensive experience to help you decide…we can even create a tailor made itinerary just for you
.

The national park rules (basically don’t get close to or feed the wildlife) are really important so please have a read of the safe trekking page and scroll down to the education section.

How does trekking with Green Hill protect the rainforest and wildlife?

Bukit Lawang trails represent only a very small part of the Gunung Leuser National Park and this area is reasonably well protected due to the presence of the tourism village and its frequent visitors. There are many other stunning areas in GLNP and the Leuser Ecosystem which are virtually untouched and home to incredible wildlife but are less protected and thus more vulnerable to human impact (hunting, poaching, extraction of natural resources...).

When you join us for a trek in the less visited areas you will be helping us to continue our conservation work in the jungle and the surrounding community's.  Our presence in the remote village and taking guests trekking in surrounding jungle has had a sustained impact as it acts as a deterrent to any would be hunters. Our Community Guides in the remote area reported a great decrease in the numbers of snare traps and bird hunting areas….and recently told us that they almost never see snare traps anymore.

Look out for our Discovery Treks: our best selling option where you get the best of both worlds by
trekking in two or more different areas of rainforest.

Trekking in Bukit Lawang:

The scenery here is stunning, trails are well established and the wildlife is quite habituated so this means that you have quite high chances of spotting wildlife which includes orangutans, thomas leaf monkeys and great argus pheasants etc. We never make any guarantees about what wildlife you will spot though! The trails are well trekked and in high season can be very busy; as a result the wildlife does not exhibit normal behaviours (e.g. often coming down to the ground etc). A big draw about trekking here is that you have the option of returning after the trek by river rafting.

Trekking in Tualang Gepang / Bukit Kencur:

This area is 30 minutes away by motorbike and really is a virtually untouched jungle. The environment is truly amazing and breathtaking.  The wildlife here shows 100% natural behaviour and can be more difficult to spot…..but it is definitely there (see our Instagram feed and biodiversity gallery).
The focus here is on experiencing a prisitine rainforest environment away from the tourist trails. This is a real ECOTREK  and conservation option as we have a team of tracking guides from the local villages, some who used to be hunters and by trekking with us they have an alternative income. They also act as community rangers and inform national park authorities of any developments such as fallen trees blocking river flow etc. And have become ambassadors for sustainable trekking practises.

Trekking in SIMOLAP

The area of national park rainforest around the area of Simolap is truly remote and it takes approx 2 hours by jeep or motorbike to get there. It really is worth the effort as the rainforest is truly amazing but potentially susceptible to human impact. We work with a local community group and their fledgling travel company who aim to help the economy of their community whilst protecting their rainforest and its wildlife by providing ethical tourism services.
